A Time to Remember the Deeper Meaning of “Gratitude”

Gratitude is one of those words that we like to dust off during the holidays and put to use. It’s a word that is particularly popular at Thanksgiving or Christmas, where a host – with glass in hand – will usually mention it in passing as their guests nod along with all due earnestness. But the moment, no matter how earnest, is almost always fleeting, and soon enough, any thought of gratitude vanishes as quickly as the turkey.

So, every once in a while it behooves us to pause and reflect on the true meaning of gratitude. And I don’t mean its basic, run-of-the-mill definition of “being appreciative” or “thankful.” I mean its deeper meaning.

A closer look at the word tells us it comes from the Latin “gratus,” for “grateful.” And if we go further, we find that its Proto-Indo-European root is “gwere,” meaning “to praise, celebrate, or be in contact with the Divine.”

And it’s here that we’re onto something, for at its heart, gratitude is about recognizing the divine good in our lives: that is, the people, moments, and memories that bring us joy and meaning. Gratitude, then, is a form of spirituality – one that acts as an antidote to the hardships (and uncertainties) of life. Indeed, studies have shown that being grateful can have a positive effect on our mood by boosting certain neurotransmitters in our brains.

In other words, counting our blessings can – quite literally – make us happier; it can imbue us with strength, put things in perspective, and shine a light at even the darkest hour. Little wonder then that our ancestors have practiced gratitude since ancient times. Through prayer, ritual, and the like, they would always acknowledge their blessings with a nod at the divine.
